Recent acquisition: Niek Otte

The Atlas Van Stolk has recently enriched its collection with more than a thousand drawings by cartoonist Niek Otte. This considerable number was presented by his children Niek Otte, Annelies Otte and Marjan Otte-van Eijk. The, mostly political, cartoons by Otte mostly distinguish themselves by the striking caricatures of Dutch politicians. Thus they are a welcome addition to the current collection. We are the Otte family very grateful for presenting us with the works of their father. These works are currently added to the database, and can soon be viewed on the website.

Niek Otte (1933-1994) studied at the Art Academy in Rotterdam between 1950 and 1954, where he specialised in advertising. In 1956 he started as a freelance advertising designer, but he grew tired of this during the 1970s. Therefore he returned to the academy in 1974 to take weekly evening classes in portrait and figure drawing. Here he discovered his talent for (political) caricature. This study eventually resulted in a position at the NRC Handelsblad newspaper, where he worked as a political cartoonist from 1977 till 1980. From 1984 until his death in 1994 he drew for the Haagsche Courant newspaper. His drawings were exhibited in, among other places, Rotterdam, France and Portugal.
